Cliff Notes from Wine Country: Our Blog

celebrating the mysterious one: library nebbiolo tasting!

Our Barbera and Nebbiolo are the quintessential one-two punch of power and finesse. The barbera is a true heavyweight, packed with a roundhouse of big, ripe fruit that grabs your attention at first sip. Our nebbiolo on the other hand, and like its Italian counterparts, is more of a mystery. Subtle at first sip, and intriguingly complex throughout the palate, this is a wine that leaves most people wondering- and wanting.

Nebbiolo is, first and foremost, an aromatic treat; perfumed and intense (yet delicate) aromas lead you to believe this will be a “big” wine. Its pale color, however, suggests a light-weight wine. Then you sip, feel the firm grip of tannins and realize this isn’t such a light wine, despite it’s appearance. The flavors are a fascinating combination of sweet, savory, and spicy- dried cherry and strawberry, tea, nutmeg, and even citrus fruit comes to mind.

In truth, nebbiolo, like all good mysteries, needs a good deal of attention and patience. They are special wines that age incredibly well, gaining even more complexity and character as time progresses. If you’ve ever tried an older Barolo or Barbaresco, you’ll know what I mean. Nebbiolo, true to its complex nature, also changes color quickly in the bottle, beginning with pale reddish/pink tones and eventually taking on more of an orange/brick hue.

And so, as a holiday treat, we’ll celebrate this enigmatic grape with a library nebbiolo tasting at the winery. Here are the details:

  • Six different vintages will be showcased: 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Special 6-pk deals on these wines will be offered.
  • Tasting is Saturday, 12/18, beginning at 3 P.M.
  • Appetizers will be served.
  • This is not a strict RSVP, but try to let me know if you’ll be attending.
  • Tasting is complimentary to club members, $25/person for non-club members.

Please take this opportunity to taste these beautiful wines and experience the difference among them as we move from older to younger vintages. If you’re unfamiliar with this grape/wine, this is a the perfect time to become acquainted!

Hope to see you all there,

Jared

  1. Hi Jared,

I am now regretting missing this event. Believe it or not, I am becoming a believer. I recently opened a 2005 CC Nebbiolo Estate Reserve and while I was again overwhelmed by tartness on Day 1, the bottle made it to a Day 2, and the tertiary flavors of orange peel, subtle spice and other good stuff there were very fascinating. Maybe I need to learn to open these wines a day in advance for full appreciation.

We’ll try to make it down for the bottling weekend. Still on for Jan 28-03?

    Cheers!
